For as long as anyone can remember, a forty-foot war machine has stood dead at the edge of Valkra Hollow — moss in its seams, a birch grown up between its heels, harmless because everyone agrees it's harmless. Two siblings have spent nine years trying to wake it and gotten nothing. Then a rogue Mech comes out of the treeline, the village runs, and a six-year-old boy who should have run looks up instead — and the dead thing opens its eyes.
